Dear participants,

Welcome to the 10th ScanBalt Forum in Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom. You couldn’t have chosen a better place for your conference. After all, the location and one of the Forum’s topics this year go hand in hand. Fresh sea breezes, magnificent sandy beaches, modern cycling routes and a seemingly endless wealth of places for walking – in short, just perfect for a conference of this kind.

And this is also reflected by the programme. In other words, the EU flagship project ‘ScanBalt Health Region’ is one of the Forum’s major topics this year. And rightly so. A cross-border networking event of this kind is a vital component in developing the Baltic Sea Region into one of the leading health regions in the world. I was more than happy to be invited to act as patron of the 10th ScanBalt Forum.

At the same time, we are marking the 10th anniversary of the campaign to promote the region that began back in 2001 with a 1st Baltic Biotech Forum in Teschow in Mecklenburg. Now eleven countries with 85 million people, 60 universities, 248 hospitals and around 2,500 life-science and biotechnology companies are involved. That means plenty of potential. 15 international projects have already been realised. All those involved can be proud of what has been achieved so far. Their work has made a decisive contribution to the progress of the Baltic Sea Health Region in the last ten years!

My congratulations and my very best wishes for a successful future, that will benefit you all.
